Where to work.

So I lost everything after 11 years in New Orleans due to Hurricaine Katrina.I'm now in Deerfield Beach florida and I already know there is no way I want to work here. It is very seasonal and flaky here.
Not much money, corporate bullshit and and due to seasonal staff, almost no way to last long or afford to live here.
I'm thinking about heading to the Northwest. I also have 98% of my body tattooed including the face and it seems more accepting of that there. I could always go back to New Orleans but do not want to after 12 years there. There you are put out to pasture as a line cook at age 40- I am 35.
Name some cities that are good to be a chef in...

Austin is actually more tat-friendly in the restaurant industry than I ever knew New Orleans to be... Otherwise, I hear that San Fran and Portland are also cool as to this sort of thing.

If you don't mind me asking, where'd you work in N.O.? (I'm originally from there, and I'm curious)

      I worked at Coop's Place : Coopsplace.net.
That was me, the checkered guy from Ripley's Believe it or Not!
      There for 11 years.

Yupyup. I know it. Cool enough place, though I'm kinda surprised that they were that cool about the tats... I vaguely remember talk of that place, and though it was a while ago and in an alcohol-hazy time of my life, I don't remember the talk being that friendly... Eh. Must've been cool enough for you to work there that long!

Ah the memories... Too bad all that shit's fucked now.

they ac tually never let me get my face tattooed there. I had every other part of my body done over the last 8 years and was saving money to leave at the time of Katrina. Now they want me to come back even with the face. It was only 10 an hour after 11 years plus some tips. the idea of going back after them not letting me get my face done for 8 years is not very thrilling to me. I have a chance to move on. the alcoholism and stress was killing me. The kitchen was heavily grandfather claused and 120 degress in the summer. I was dying there. No mats on the floors.
The boss always had predjudice towads me before about my tattoos and now it would be worse. There was no vacation pay or insurance at all. I had no vacations in the entire 11 years too. No bennies at all. Now the city is so messed up and I lost everything there too. Rents have gone nuts too.
Thinking of going to Portland, Or. More oppurtunity there.

Yeah, I sure as hell don't recommend going back. Especially not with all that shit that you had BEFORE... Ugh. Fuck that. Fuck them.

I DO hear Portland's badass. Too cold for my swamp-blood, but perhaps you hadn't grown your gills yet... :P

I cannot go back if possible. Was not growing as a chef and no vacation pay or healt bennies sucked. Also in New Orleans, 35 is kinda old to be working in restaurants. I think it is the alcoholism that ages people.

Nah, I know PLENTY of people over 35 in restaurants there! Or did... It's just that by that point they're usually in fine dining.

Don't go back. That city will never be the same. I'm afraid of what they're going to turn it into, personally.
