I am a private chef. I have worked as such my entire life. I havent had too many bad things happen to me since I started a very long time ago-I was 19 when I started cooking. I am 37 now
I recently took a gig with a Frat House at USC. There were red flags to begin with. So I will take some of the blame for taking the job in the first place. HOWEVER. I was upfront, HONEST and worked my ass for this group and after two weeks, they call me on a SUNDAY after I had met with them the friday before to tell them what they still needed to address to fire me on the phone. Thsi came fromone of the Alumni who is suppose to be some big shot at some entertainment company. he said they were too busy to make sure my checks would be ontime. WTF? Too busy. Then I am too fuckin busy to cook for your punk ass frat house.
Anyway, I ran into the chef that use to work for them. She worked there for 8 years and she didnt even know they had fired her and hired me. She found out the day she came to open the kitchen for the fall and I was there. When I asked if I could help her, she simply said. "Is Seth here?" When I answered "I dont know a Seth" she walked out. I now know why she had tears in her eyes.
She worked for them for 8 years and passed up other job offers over the summer because she thought she was going to be there again. WOW how rude? How lame. How fucked up is this. So since I now know how they treated her, it really doesnt surprise me how they treated me.
I have tried now for two weeks to get things that are MINE from the kitchen and I cant get in or get a return phone call. I had to call an attorney today.
This really SUCKS

Re: I hate working for AHoles
Mon, September 11, 2006 - 4:08 PMOuch...I just took a job with a frat up here in Seattle. I'll have to keep an eye open for that. I've never worked for one before, so this'll be a little different. I'm sorry you went through that; I hope your attorney nails 'em good. -

Tue, September 12, 2006 - 8:12 PMChef's for fraternity houses? I never heard of that. Are they too lazy to cook themselves or what? Is this a normal thing at most frat houses? -

Re: I hate working for AHoles
Wed, September 13, 2006 - 9:05 PMIt's ver normal
most houses have a chef or a cook. Girls houses have a full kitchen staff. Head chef, breakfast cook, dishwashers and maids.
Dont get me wrong. I have worked for some really cool frat houses. In fact I am doing the weeding of this guy fromthe frist house I ever worked for.
They have to eat.
The cool thing is that it's like running a small cafe. You order the food, plan the menu and cook the meals.
Best of luck to you with the Frat you're with up there. Most times working for guys is the best. -

Re: I hate working for AHoles
Wed, September 13, 2006 - 10:26 PMThanks...I'm actually looking forward to it. I used to cook for a house full of nuns...no, actual nuns. I was always waiting for one to tell me I was the antichrist or something, but it was neat. After a while, I got to know what everybody liked, and could surprise people on their birthdays and stuff. It was pretty low key, and I'd like that again. My last place, I got "laid off" for telling the boss I was going to turn her in to L&I if she didn't quit nicking hours off the staff pay checks. Grr. -

Re: I hate working for AHoles
Fri, September 15, 2006 - 8:54 AMIt's gonna be about 50 guys, just lunch and dinner. They gave me a sweetheart schedule...I think their last cook took a lot of shortcuts. 11am to 5:15, and they said 1-2 hours off between lunch and dinner. Monday through Friday, one Saturday per quarter for a special dinner, and I can use their kitchen for catering on the side. I'd never worked for a house before, so when they told me all this (plus all of the school holidays off, paid...except summer's not paid, of course), I was pretty taken aback. I have a daughter and a lot of side projects, so this is the best schedule EVAR.
Sysco is the vendor they've been using, although I've generally used others. I'm not a huge fan, but it feels like they have a deal in place or something, so I'll have to suss it out.

Re: I hate working for AHoles
Fri, September 15, 2006 - 9:37 AMI'm glad you got your attorney. You'll need it.
I've had plenty of opportunity to cook for frat houses and looked at them overall, and said 'fuuuhuuuuck that' because I know the mindset half of them already have and WE are just the hired help. Fortunately, you're in California and we have some tough laws within regards to termination, witheld (spelled?) pay etc. so you'll do well to take them on.
Go public with your story, expose them on NPR, with the fraternal board and turn them in for the behavior, expose them all and stand up for yourself, you're no child and deserve to be treated with respect there Louie! But maybe I'm just a bit predjudiced agains the "University of Spoiled Children" ;)
I feel bad for the prior woman who'd been there so long as well......how awful you got into that mess.
Come up north, there's tons of GREAT families in the SF Bay Area who'd LOVE to have a personal chef like yourself!
Best of luck with it all.

Re: I hate working for AHoles
Fri, September 15, 2006 - 11:57 AMThanks Natasha
I will say this. I went to USC and I love USC. I will never change my view of USC and Ilove the education I got there. As for it being the Univeristy for spolied children, so be it. I am spoiled and I do what I do, not because I have to. Ilove what I do. I just HATE A-Holes.
90% of what I do is private.......in home chef, weddings and event layout and design. I ma in no way hurting becuase I lost the contract. I dont like how it was done. Now the lady before me wasnt as lucky. She needed the job and isnt doing to hot with the gig she took. $200 per week less money for her. That sucks.
I've workedx for Frat Houses in the past from all over. New York, Colorado, Atlanta. I have even dont work for sorority Houses as well. I cant and wont say they are all BAD, because they arent. Some of my coolest accounts and awesome food shows are done at Frat Houses and Sorority Houses. There are some houses I would never work for. They do treat the staff like "the help"
As far as the Bay Area goes. I have done private work for three families there. I have also done work for SAE, Pi Phi and Pi Kapp over at UC Berkeley. I still come up from time to time to do one day event for the families I use to work for. People there tend to be impressed with the CCA students. Why? I really dont know. I can out cook any of them anyday, anytime, anywhere. INCLUDING the instructors.
I am posting the update on the Sig Ep case. I think you'll like!!!!
Thansk for the support baby. I will be up that way in two weekd for a big event I doing. I also have some cool friends there. Have you been to Sauce in Hayes Valley? Get the MEATLOAF!!!! -
