Okay, I"m beginning to notice a trend. Is there some lower percentage that it's common to tip in the midwest? I've been noticing a lot of tourists from that part of the country who otherwise seem fairly cultured diners, leaving me about 12%. I get the verbal tip of course, dammit! I just can't believe everyone in the midwest is a bad tipper so I"m wondering if the 20% rule isn't so muuch in practice there. Anyone?

Sun, June 18, 2006 - 4:36 PMi think some people are just bastards. I always tip at least 20% but i work the business so i guess it's different. I know some old people who will leave two dollars no matter what the bill is. Only thing better is some shiny quarters -

Re: Midwesterners
Tue, June 27, 2006 - 6:34 PMI have a friend who's mother was a waitress all her life, she had 7 kids. He will go to a restaurant & leave no tip. His pathetic excuse? I don't get tipped where I work, and if they want to make more money then they should get another job. Yet his attitude towards them is they are his servent not deserving of eye contact, and should be happy to cater to him. I hate going to restaurants with him because of it.
He will opften pay the tab...and I will pull out the tip, he has actually taken it off the table...last time it was $5 and he took it, I growled at him to put it back or I would leave $10 tip for our $20 meal. He put it back.
I had him ask his mother once why he does not tip & she said to him "becasue you are an asshole!" and I laughed out loud, but he was confused & didn't understand why she would say somehting like that.
No matter what way I have explained it, he still does not get tipping of why.
Anyone got any ideas how to get thru his thick skull? He is very resistent to changing his opinion, and I rarely go with him to restaurants anymore cuz I am embarrassed...I always tip, and tip well, unless the service was totally crappy, then I let them know why I was dissatisfied (after trying to help the service be ok).
(hey anyone ever spit in a lousy tippers food before, if they recognize them? true stories may get thru to my bozo friend.) -

Re: Midwesterners
Tue, June 27, 2006 - 11:06 PMSpit? Oh god yes. And if you are obnoxious all night & order decaf, plan on being up all night, because I WILL pour you regular. Tell your friend that in many states, servers earn $2 an hour and all of that is taxed away, leaving us with a blank paycheck. Restaurants are not required to pay minimum wage.
And I hope he likes to cook for himself because if we all got other jobs, there would be no one to serve him. -

Re: Midwesterners
Wed, June 28, 2006 - 3:59 PMwhen i lived in utah i got the lousiest tips i've ever recieved, ever! a lot of mormon folks will NOT tip you more than 10%, because that is the percentage of the tithe in the lds church. they figure, they give God 10% of their income, why would they give a waitress more than that? it's logical i suppose, but also totally infuriating, especially because a lot of times they would come in parties of 8 or more (all those kids...). Any waitperson who spends all night dealing with a table with 8 picky-ass kids deserves a 20 PERCENT TIP. -

Re: Midwesterners
Wed, June 28, 2006 - 11:00 PMGlad to hear...yes, he is a jerk for not tipping...I will tell him the $2 part...that is just sick! you bust your ass pleasing all those unpleasable people...and the owner basically makes a mint & leaves you with dust. How sick is that?
Why would you want to be a waitperson if you don;t get a decent paycheck? Do you really make it worth while with tips? I mean, really, you work sooo damn hard! I always tip big because I certainly would not want to do that job, I try to not complain at all...really....and I feel badly when someone at my table does complain (ok, I am a bit of a co-dependant...)and I would have a hard time biting my tongue on most days...based on how I see other patrons act. Ya, I'd get fired pretty quickly. -

Re: Midwesterners
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 6:02 AMYeah, in fine dining, one generally does make enough to make it worthwhile. I usually leave with $150-250 a night. I think most of us in the biz just do it because we're in or shortly out of college/grad school and it's a good way to make money quickly, especially if you're the stereotypical artist/musician/actor/writer-waiter. We really are WAITING... for something better to come along. Sure, some people choose it as their career, and god bless them, but I'm at least telling myself I'm just passing through.
I do find it odd that the restaurant industry seems to be completely exempt from so many labor laws... overtime, minimum wage... required breaks... vacation... sick pay. We get none of that. Hopefully this will all be over for me soon. Didn't get two master's degrees for nothing, I hope. *wanders off grumbling to self* -

Re: Midwesterners
Sun, July 30, 2006 - 8:19 PMIn my experience, the worst tippers are from Tennessee. Hands down. Although they are usually easy customers.....ordering things with white bread and bacon with extra mayo to dip their fries in. It gets a little tough at dinner service when they don't know what ricotta cheese is, or look at you like a deer in headlights when asked how they would like their meat cooked (they like it real well done), and have no idea what a fish taco is.
Why they don't stick to Denny's is beyond me.

Re: Midwesterners
Mon, November 20, 2006 - 1:11 PMThe original standard tip was 10%. That edged up to 12% in the seventies, then 15%, probably because minimum wage did not increase. (15% plus is the 2Xtax version in California)./ New Yorkers began demanding 20%, and some fools believe them. 12% is still considered standard in some parts of the country.
It is also common to give higher tips on lower priced meals.
